Agreed re: the missing city in Texas. If The Dalles, Ore., get's it's own "stop" on I-84, surely El Paso, Tex., which has more than 62x the population, deserves a stop on I-10, too. I'm also curious why the author didn't list Laredo's border twin, like he did for Nogales, etc.

ReplyDeleteAs I understand it, I-35 actually stops short of the Mexican border (at traffic lights) and access to Mexico is via local/surface roads. In the other instances, the Interstate continues right up to and across the border without having to switch roads.
The Dalles: purely because there's more room to show cities on the western half of the map... the system's not as complex there.
El Paso: there's definitely an argument for inclusion, but it's very close to Las Cruces, which takes priority in my hierarchy as a junction city.
Because that's the thing about this diagram - population or size of a city has no importance whatsoever. It's all about connections. The largest dots are where two "major" highways meet, then medium dots for major meeting minor, then a tiny dot for two minor ones meeting.
And this explains the seeming over-importance of Kent: not a big town, but two "major" Interstates (I-10 and I-20) meet there.
And don't even get me started on Pittsburgh! :-) Large town, but it's not actually on any two-digit Interstate... so it simply isn't on this diagram. No connections = invisible.
