Growth of the NYC Subway

It's New York City day here at The Map Scroll! Here's a link to an animated map that shows the growth of the NYC subway over time, from Appealing Industries (via Spacing Toronto).

Unfortunately there's no time legend, which would have seemed like a no-brainer to include. Still a very interesting animation, though. And if you want to see about eleventy billion more maps from throughout the history of the NYC subway, go here.

And as a bonus, here's another one from Spacing Toronto of Toronto's own (admittedly less exciting) subway map.

That subway map is frightening to watch. We're kind of a plague slowly taking over the land-masses.

But this is just the way you want to do it! Underground, where there's a negligible environmental impact, and in a large city, where energy use is far and away more effecient than it is in the suburbs or rural areas. I mean, if this were Robert Moses' plan for freeways in NYC, that'd be one thing. Now if you really want to see a plague slowly taking over the land-masses, look at this.

Hmm. Speaking of Robert Moses...

innovation is very natural and happens in the "real world" as new plants and animals colonize new ecological niches.

I would be aware that as somebody who really doesn’t comment to blogs a lot (in actual fact, this may be my first put up), I don’t think the time period “lurker” is very flattering to a non-posting reader.
