I just read this article the other day; it was very entertaining. I couldn't decide, if I lived in one of these places, if I would be proud of the name or petition the local government to change it... place names have been changed before. Scranton, Pennsylvania used to be called "Skunk's Misery," for example. But perhaps it would be more fun just to keep the offbeat name.
Ha! Skunk's Misery? I had no idea - that's great. And but Scranton is the big improvement they came up with? Sounds like a rash. If you're going to start over from scratch, why not go with something a little more... mellifluous.

I remember Crotch Crescent! It's a road in Oxford, I used to walk past it on my way to piano lessons.
